GIBSON, LONG, JOLLY: Mary E. GIBSON m. Robert A. LONG in Gallia Co 10-22-1870.
They had two children: Carrie and James. Mary married Henry JOLLY 9-2-1876 in
Gallia Co. In the Meigs Co 1880 census Mary and Henry are living with the two
children listed as step children to Henry. Carrie married a Willard C. Lankford
in Washington Co 5-3-1889 but James is still missing. Is he James Francis?
Did he come to Marshall Co WV with someone possibly his step father? He did not
remember parents or place of birth. Was on his own at 8 yrs old knowing only his
name and birthday which he said was 4-l-1875.
Eileen Goddard
The above is a correction to the following query:
In the 1870 census there is listed a Wm & Bridgett Long. Their son David is
married to Mary Abigale Cook and they are living w/Wm. & Bridgett. In the
1880 cenus Mary Abigale is married to a man named Henry Jolly. Listed are two
step children of Henry Carrie age 8 and James age 4. I found Carrie's
marriage in Washington Co., OH. She married Willard C. Lankford of Allegheny
Co., PA 5-30-1889. I cannot find anything on the James. I am looking for a
James Francis. My grandfather came to Marshall Co., WV in the 1880's. He did
not know his parents names nor the place of birth. He thought that he might
have come from Ohio and that he might have lived on the PA/WV border for a
while. He only remembers that he was "on his own" at the age of 8 in Marshall
Co. and that his birthday was 4-1-1875. Hope this James is indeed my
grandfather James Francis.

ALEXANDER, HAYMAN: Seeking additional information on the death of
HAYMAN HAMILTON ALEXANDER. In 1909, Hayman was about 7 years old. He and his little
sister, Marion Charlotte Alexander (age 4) traveled from Louisiana with their mother,
Mary Mathilda Alexander (nicknamed "Till") to visit family in Letart Falls / Apple
Grove. Hayman's father, JAMES EZRA ALEXANDER, was unable to make the trip, and was
back in Louisiana at work. The little boy apparently was injured in a hayloft accident
(I don't know exactly where or what the circumstances were), and died of blood poisoning
or tetanus. Hayman's grandparents were WILLIAM B. and CHARLOTTE ALEXANDER. The accident
may have occurred at the farm of Charlotte's father, EZRA C. HAYMAN. Any information
such as newspaper clippings or town news related to this tragedy would be greatly
appreciated. Please contact Hillmarke@aol.com.

OAKLEY, HUMPHREY: My great-great-great-greatgrandparents, Miles and Suzanna Oakley settled in
Meigs County in 1811, coming originally from Connecticut. Miles died in Pomeroy in 1844,
Suzanna outlived him. They appear to have lived with son Bennett Oakley. I am particularly
interested in learning more about a daughter, Anna, who married a Benjamin Humphrey. Anna
and Benjamin had a son, Miles Oakley Humphrey, born 1822 and their youngest, daughter
Caroline, was born in 1849 in Athens County. Benjamin Humphrey died about 1850; place unknown;
Anna died in Athens County about 1859. I know a fair amount about the Oakley's families in
Connecticut but little about their days in Ohio. I also know little about the Humphrey family
except that Benjamin's father was said to have served with Francis Marion during the
Revolutionary War. If anyone has any information on either the Oakleys or the Humphreys,
please e-mail me. Kathlyn Halvorsen

GEYER: I am doing research on the Geyer family of Pomeroy and Chester Ohio.
The Geyers came to Meigs county in the 1830s from Edigheim, Germany in the Palatine.
They came with many other well known Meigs County families: Wessar, Priode, Ohlinger,
Berg, Keck, Reuter, Ihle and Findling from the west bank of the Rhine in the Palatine.
Our first generation was lead by Johann Geyer and his wife Friederike Luise nee Sommerock.
Two of Johann's sons were Methodist ministers in the German M.E. movement; Rev. John Geyer
[1804-1880] and Rev. William Geyer [1818-1898]. These two were carpenters and built the
first Methodist churches in Chester and later in Pomeroy. John's son, George Hiram Geyer,
was also a well known minister in the GME. I am descended from William's 13th child,
Charles Wesley Geyer and Lillian Robinson both of Meigs County. Gary Harding

BOLEN: 1850 Meigs Co. Census, Bedford Twp. lists William Bolen, age 35 with wife
Sarah, age 30. Children listed are Jane, age 17, Joseph, either 14 or 16,
John, age 12, Tipton, age 10 and Samuel, age 6/12. This family disappears by the 1860
Census. I have checked all the surroundings counties and they are not to be
found. Although I did find a marriage in Athens Co. Dec. 13, 1863 for Bowlin,
Tipton and McCally, Hannah. In 1870, a William T. Bolin and Hannah show up in
the Athens Co. census and the ages are close enough to be the Tipton in the
1850 Meigs Co. census. Where did this family go? Will appreciate any
information I can get as I believe the Joseph in this family to be my

BOWEN: Searching for David BOWEN, b. c. 1827 in South Wales, came to the Port of Pa.
to Meigs County, Ohio sometime before 1869. He was married in Wales to a Mary
WILLIAMS, b. c. 1828. They had a large family, and my information is that
David left his family sometime after the 1880 census for WV, possibly to where
his oldest daughter, Mary BOWEN BAER lived in the Huntington area. That is
where I lost him.
Would appreciate any information on the family before and after they came to

WESTMORELAND:My gm, Neora Jeanetta WESTMORELAND, was born in Meigs County
July 19, 1877, to Joseph and Sarah WESTMORELAND. Family history is that her father was
approximately 40 when she was born, and both parents died before she reached
her teen years. Her parents may have been from Cumbria County in England.
Her father purportedly owned a coal mine, and a guardian was appointed for her
when her parents died. I know nothing about the guardian or what happened to
a sister or step sister of my gm.
I have nearly all the information after her marriage to Able BOWEN of in the
early 1900's, but nothing much other than I have listed before that.
I would very much appreciate exchanging info with any interested parties. Jodie BOWEN Russu

PENNYBACKER/PENNYBAKER: Searching for descendants of John Pennybacker and Catherine Duncan
Pennybacker. They arrived in Pomeroy about 1839 from West Virginia with

(June 3, 1998) Re my April 30 posting I have since found that the McCumber families mentioned were
in Carroll Co., MO in the 1870 Census along with the widow of my ggrandfather John Thomas Henry.
Rebecca McCumber had remarried Oliver Hiatt and they are on both the 1870 and 1880 Census from
Carroll Co. Mo. The only McCumber in 1880 was William. Hope this helps someone and hope someon
has some help for me. Thanks.
(October 21, 1998) Re my June 3, 1998 posting have found my great-great grandparents James and
Lydia Henry and children James, William, John, Eliza, Joseph, Franklin, Allen and Sarah on the
1850 Meigs Co. Census. On the 1860 Census John had married Rebecca McCumber, Eliza had married
Samuel McCumber, and a Mary Henry was married to Daniel McCumber. All the Henrys were found on
the Carroll Co. MO 1870 Census except Sarah (and she was possibly married and may have been on
the Census in MO). The two McCumber families were also in Carroll Co. MO. in 1870. Have found
info that my gr-grandfather John (Thomas) Henry was killed by "Bloody Bill" Anderson's men
(Anderson succeeded Quantrill as leader of the renegade force). He died 24 Aug 1833 and his widow
Rebecca McCumber married Oliver Hiatt. Am looking for info regarding James b. ca 1803 in PA and
Lydia b. ca 1806 in VA. The first four children were born in PA and the remainder were born in
Meigs Co. Betty Henry Pilkington

OAK GROVE CHURCH, LETART: I am trying to contact someone who can tell me whether services
are still being held at Oak Grove Church (formerly EUB, more recently United Methodist) near
Letart, WV, which is just across the river from Letart Falls. My maternal family comes from the
immediate area (PIATT) and I am interested in attending services there on June 14th if possible.
However, I can find no current information about address, pastor, etc. through national resources.
Failing an active church group there, I would also be interested in contacting those who maintain
the cemetery.
Thanks for any help you can give in putting me in touch with people who might know the answers to
my questions. My e-mail address is balauer@aol.com, but I would be glad to telephone or write via
federal mail if that is the best way to reach someone who can help. I appreciate your time! Beth Lauer

CASTER, GREEN, OGDIN: I am researching these 3 families which were joined by various
marriages. Names that are involved include William GREEN, James CASTER, Sr. and Alvin OGDIN,

Columbia Chapel Church. Does this reunion still occur?
One of my connections is my Great Great Grandfather was James Ripley Castor 1816-1879 who married

TUBBS, MCCONKY: I have handwritten receipts for Common Pleas Court fees dated 1868 between Whitney
Tubbs and Lemual Tubbs et al and Ethel Tubbs et al. Lemual is my GGfather, however I can not make
any link to Ethel. There is a marriage record for Ethel to a Sarah McConky which would tend to
imply that Ethel was a male. Also, for what it is worth I have several original land deeds dating
to 1832. I would appreciate any information on links to other Meigs Co. Tubbs as my line stops
with Ranselaer Tubbs and although census records indicate there were other children (girls) in the
families I don't have any names. Also, the given name Orrin appears twice in my line and there
is an Orrin listed in the Delaware Co. 1850 US census which I can't link to but tend to think he is
probably an uncle of some sort. Any information would be appreciated. Jim Woodyard

DYE: I am interested in Thomas Dye, his family, and background information on Dyesville,
Meigs County, OH. Thomas Dye is listed in the 1810 census for Wood County, WV. He appears in
the land records in Meigs County having purchased land from E. Cutler in Scipio Township in 1819.
He and at least one of his sons appear in the 1820, 1830, 1840 and 1850 census records in Meigs
County.
The town of Dyesville, Meigs County intrigues me. It appears to lie to the west of Scipio Township
in Columbia Township. Was it "founded" by Thomas and his family? Thomas is the nephew of Ezekiel
Dye who settled in "Renrock", Ohio in 1804-1806. When Furman Dye petitioned to name the settlement
Dyesville, the petition was denied because Dyesville, Meigs County existed. I would really like to
know more about the history of Dyesville, Meigs County.
He was born in 1776 in New Jersey and died in 1858 either in Meigs County, OH or in Lawrence
Township, Washington County, OH. I need to confirm place of death and am researching cemetery
records.
I am developing a family history page at

Thomas is discussed in the section on the Brothers of John Dye.

Looking for info on the old "poor house". It may have been a sanitarium at one
time. I heard it was torn down & a hosiptal was built in it's place. It should
be around the Snowdon, Pomeroy area of Meigs Co. It was in exsistence in the
1880's, & this is where people were sent if they were "crazy", or couldn't pay
their bills, or if they had no one to care for them. If you died here, you
were buried in the back, up on a hill with no marker. Does any one know of
this place or the burial ground out back? Any info would be appreciated
greatly, as my gt. gt. grandfather. Timothy Welch, is said to be buried there.

Is anyone aware of a newspaper that may have served this area more specifically? There was not a
great deal of info for the subject townships in the Telegraph.

After three and one half months waiting for the film I was, needless to say, very disappointed.
