Small town newspapers of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries are generally rich sources of genealogical information, as well as a window into the lives and times of our ancestors. The Tribune-Telegraph and other papers published in Meigs County were no exception. I originally planned to transcribe and publish below the front page of one issue of the Tribune-Telegraph for each month of 1897. I hope to eventually return to this project and complete it, but it is currently on the back burner.
Please bear in mind that the content of the following pages is the product of an American society that was considerably different from ours in its attitudes and mores. Some of the words, sentiments or stereotypes expressed in the newspapers of that day would, quite properly, be considered offensive to various groups of people were they to appear today. I am presenting this information in the interest of advancing our understanding of history, and thus have not edited it for content. I make no apology for the words of an earlier age, but neither do I endorse them.
In some places the original materials were damaged or the microfilm was illegible. I have indicated those places with brackets ([]), and where I felt that the content might be inferred I have placed that content within the brackets.
