December 20, 1999 REEVES: I am seeking to determine the relationship between Richard and William Reeves who lived in Scipio Township in the first half of the 19th century and their ancestry. They are both listed on the 1820-1840 censuses; their children and grandchildren emigrated to Fremont County, Iowa in 1852, among them, William Reeves Jr., my great great grandfather, born May 25, 1813 in Ohio. Wiliam Jr. married Anna Saxton (parents' names unknown) and they had five children in Ohio, Barzilla, Joseph, Thomas, Robert Lindsey and Isaiah Manoah (my great grandfather). I do not know if William Jr. had siblings (I do know that Rueben and Richard Jr. Reeves were Richard's children). To date, I believe that William Reeves was born around 1755 (possibly 1765) and died in 1846 in Ohio; I believe he married Margaret Elizabeth Ross (1783-1827). From LDS and Ancestry.com records, I believe Richard Reeves Sr. was born in 1759, probably in New Jersey; he also died in 1846 in Ohio (was probably married to an Elizabeth Dix). It is possible that a Solomon Reeves was Richard's father; was he also William's, or did they share a grandfather? I would also like to know more about Anna Saxton's parents and ancestors. Many thanks. (PS, I would be happy to pay someone to help research these Reeves--Let me know.) John G. Hoeschler (Email jghoeschler@email.msg.com).

Both are buried at Old Hill Cemetery, Middleport, Ohio. Henry Spencer Dewees, the Civil War vet, was a stone mason. Would love to hear from anyone connected to this family. December 20, 1999 MURPHY, ATKINSON, ROUSH, WILBUR, PULSIFER: My maternal gg grandfather Patrick H. Murphy (?-1861) emigrated from Ireland to New York in the 1840s and married Sarah Atkinson (?-1885) of Greenup County, KY. They had two children--Kate A. Murphy (1850-1889, m. Samuel P. Roush) and Delia Murphy (1847-1935, m. a Mr. Wilbur) before the family moved, about 1850, from NY to Middleport, OH. There, Patrick and Sarah had three more children: Elizabeth Eleanor Murphy (1852-1839, m. Samuel Atkinson, then Walter Breen); Charles E. Murphy (1856-1909); and my great grandfather Frank Bentley Murphy (1859-1931, m. Cordelia Pulsifer). I understand that a Patrick Murphy is mentioned on p. 309 of _Pioneer History of Meigs County_. I would appreciate receiving a quote of this passage as well as any information about the people mentioned above or their descendants. Thanks very much. December 20, 1999 SAYRE, HALL, McDANIEL, SUTTON, FERRELL, GRIMM, SMITH, HOLMES, HUGHES, WEBB, CHAPMAN, FENIMORE, SULLIVAN: I am trying to finalize my Sayre Genealogy to be ready for printing in early 2000. For many years, I have contacted people in Meigs County and received lots of help. I appreciate this very much and want to say THANK YOU to all who (shared) contributed and will contribute. However, in the final stages when I must get it ready, I am left with several unplaced bits of information and groups. I must spend most of my time now on editing and getting the genealogy printed out "camera ready." So please don't request information. If you can solve some of these problems, I would appreciate an E-mail or send by regular mail to RALPH SAYRE, RR 1 Box 92, Buckhannon, WV 26201-9707. Below are some of my problem areas associated with Meigs County. 1. Who was the Benjamin Sayre who married 13 March 1817 (Gallia Mar. Rec.1-68) Rebecca HALL? She was living with Moses Sayre in Meigs County when the 1860 census was taken, and her birth place was given as Pennsylvania. In Letart Falls Cemetery, there is a marker for Rebecca, wife of Benjamin Sayre, died 10 March 1862. Many of the Sayre family were buried in this cemetery. I have a good record of most of them, but no information or description will show to what family this Benjamin Sayre belongs. The 1820 - 1850 Censuses never showed a Benjamin with wife Rebecca of an age to be these. 2. MADISON G. SAYRE, minister, born 6 May 1823; married 15 February 1846 Hannah C. SUTTON (1813-1892); died 12 September 1907 in Meigs County. All clues indicate that he belongs in the descendants of John and Susannah (Ferrell) Sayre. Neither his obituary nor his death record named his parents. He had Civil War service, but I doubt there were pension records since he outlived his wife. 3. JOHN SAYRE, according to THE SAYRE FAMILY, by T. M. Banta, 1901, was born 15 January 1765, married Susan SUTTON; and died in Meigs County 1854. I have not been able to locate him in any 1850 census (at which time he would have been 85). I think the book is in error, confusing his wife's maiden name with that of Madison's wife, SUTTON. There is evidence in Monongalia County deeds that he was married to Susannah Ferrel, daughter of Robert Ferrel, Sr. Does anyone have the factual data on John, i.e. true death date; burial place, etc.???? 4. I need to identify the SAYRE parents of (from Meigs county Marriages): 1-25 Nancy SAYRE m. 14 Feb 1823 Levi CHAPMAN 1-150 Hannah SAYRE m. 29 Dec 1834 Samuel FENIMORE 1-221 Mary SAYRE m. 21 Oct 1839 Jeremiah SULLIVAN 1-228 Margaret SAYRE m. 23 April 1840 David SMITH 1-274 Margaret SAYRE m. 24 Mar 1842 Thomas HUGHES 2-438 Martha SAYRE m. 13 Oct 1861 George K. WEBB Jane SAYRE m. 8 Nov 1867 Thomas M. HOLMES also a Jane SAYRE who married a GRIMM. 5. Buried in Letart Falls Cemetery is "Rachel, wife of Jeremiah McDANIEL, d. Mar. 11, 1858". She was Rachel Sayre, daughter of David and Hannah (Frazier) Sayre. In the census, I found a Hannah (McDaniel) who married Lallance, but there were other McDaniel children. Does anyone have names of Hannah's sisters, and/or descendants of Jeremiah McDaniel, Jr.? Thanks, Ralph Sayre (Email sayrehouse@juno.com).

September 15, 1999 ALESHIRE: Am looking for any information about Michael Aleshire, who was born about 1770 in Page County, Virginia, but who moved to Meigs County, Ohio, and died there in 1845. September 15, 1999 CARTWRIGHT, WHITNEY, HOYT: I am researching the CARTWRIGHTS, WHITNEYS, and HOYTS, who are all connected by marriage. My third great grandfather, John M. CARTWRIGHT, born 1794-1800, married Thankful WHITNEY in Meigs County, Ohio, in 1827. (Thankful was the daughter of Jabez and Abigail [Wheeler] WHITNEY, born 1809 in Maine.) The Cartwrights were enumerated in Bedford Twp, Meigs County, in the 1830 census. In about 1836, the family, along with the Whitneys, moved to Adams Co, IL. In 1825, William CARTWRIGHT died in Orange Township, Meigs Co., intestate. His wife, Mary ("Polly") HOYT, was made administratrix of his estate. John M. posted bond and was also awarded one of the larger gifts from William's estate. I originally thought John was the son of William but suspect from the birth date range gathered from censuses and marriage date 1811-1821 for Wm. (the Athens Co. Marriage Records from the probate court were recorded without a year and on a page that was not chronological) and 1827 for John, that he is probably a younger brother. William is probably the son of Caleb CARTWRIGHT. He bought half of Caleb's land in about 1813 in Orange Twp, of what was then Athens County. Caleb disappears by 1816. William and his wife, Polly are buried in Geyer cemetery, Meigs Co. Could anyone make suggestions or have any information on who John M's father is? I am also looking for Wm. & Polly's son-in-law Morris Henry D. in Orange with whom Polly is supposed to be living in 1871. If anyone can shed any light on Jabez Whitney's origin it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Alice Harris (Email akh@molalla.net).

February 25, 1999 PARTLOW, PULLINS: I'm just getting started in my research and have run into a glitch. I have a tree from my grandmother which traces the PARTLOW family back to John Partlow in Spotsylvania, Virginia. My grandmother shows that an Amos Partlow was the son of John Partlow Jr and that Amos came to Meigs County in 1800 and was one of the original settlers in the Rutledge Township area (supposedly Pomeroy). Amos also had a son, Amos Jr, born in 1830, who married Jane Pullins. Amos Jr. was supposedly the mayor of Pomeroy, so I would think I should be able to find some information on him. Assuming I believe all the above, the major problem I have is that I've found two other databases showing decendants of John Partlow and they don't show an Amos as a son of John Jr. (not to mention that my grandmother's dates don't make sense, I think she's missing a generation). I'm looking for any information on the Amoses, especially Amos Sr's parents - can you suggest some contacts in Meigs County? Diane Beagle (Email beagle1339@aol.com).

February 25, 1999 RUSSELL: I am trying to find information about my maternal grandfather who was from the Pomeroy, Ohio area. His name was Ruben (Reuben) Russell b. 1873 but I'm not sure where. In 1900 he left Pomeroy and was married in Illinois to Rosa Fuller and in 1901 they moved to Colorado. His parents were Shannon and Rhoda. His siblings were Ed, Edith, Otis, Rhoda, Charles. Russell is such a common name that I am having trouble getting started. In a few hours in Pomeroy I did find records pertaining to Rhoda and Charles. But in visually scanning census records found more than one Reuben and Ruben but nothing with the entire family that would identify that it was the correct family. I have found papers from Colorado in which his first name was spelled both ways. Can you make any suggestions? Paul & Jane Simkin (Email pjsjbs@juno.com) or (simkinj@relex.com).
